160th birth anniversary Remembering M Visvesvaraya on Engineers Day 2021

Engineers Day 2021: M Visvesvaraya also known as 'VM Sir' due to his various contributions in the field of engineering and being a pioneer of education.

Every year 15 September is celebrated as Engineers Day in India in the memory of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of the finest engineers of India. M Visvesvaraya is regarded as one of the foremost nation-builders who performed the miracles on which modern India was built. According to the Institution of Engineers India (IEI), he was referred to as 'the pioneer of economic planning in India'. M Visvesvaraya is also known as 'VM Sir' for his various contributions in the field of engineering and being a pioneer of education.

Born on September 15, 1861, in a small village called Muddanahalli, Karnataka, Visvesvaraya obtained a degree in civil engineering from the Pune College of Engineering. He had expertise in the field of irrigation and flood disaster management. He became famous for his groundbreaking work with modern irrigation techniques as well as flood control and mitigation in these areas.

He designed the 'Automatic Barrier Water Floodgates' installed in Pune in 1903 at Khadakwasla Reservoir. He was the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam in Mandya district of Karnataka and the chief engineer of the flood protection system for Hyderabad. He also founded the famous Government Engineering College, now known as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, in 1917.

He was knighted as a Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE) by King George V for his contribution to the public good. M Visvesvaraya received India's highest honor Bharat Ratna in 1955.

Congratulating engineers on Engineers Day last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "... We remember Sir M Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary. India is proud of the contribution of our engineers in nation building." PM Modi said that engineers are synonymous with hard work and determination. "Human progress would be incomplete without their innovative zeal. Greetings and best wishes to all hardworking engineers on #EngineersDay. Tributes to exemplary engineer Sir M Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary."

In 2018, PM Modi praised the engineers of the country. He took to Twitter to honor engineering genius M. Visvesvaraya. He wrote, "On Engineering Day, I congratulate our hardworking engineers and appreciate their dexterity as well as dedication. Their role in nation building is extremely important. I also pay tribute to the eminent engineer Shri M Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary. I give."
