The special day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 and was first observed on the third Tuesday of September in the year 1982. To commemorate this day, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung annually at the United Nations Headquarters. The bell is made from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa. In addition, it was a gift from the United Nations to Japan as a "reminder of the human cost of war"; The inscription on its side reads, "Long live perfect world peace".
