Gene Smart came up with a very special date for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards.

Emmys as She Attends First Awards

On Sunday, the Hacks star, 70, attended the 2021 Emmys with her 13-year-old son, Forrest, whom she shares with her late husband Richard Gilliland. Smart is also the mother of 31-year-old son Conor.

Smart and her son both wore chic black outfits for the event, with the actress wearing a long black dress with a sheer turtleneck, while her son opted for a black suit and blue undershirt.

Walking the red carpet, the two posed for E! Regarding Smart's nomination, which included acting approval for his work on Hacks and Easttown's Mare.

"Being respected and nominated never gets old. I mean it's part of the fun and it's best to be respected by your peers," says Smart.

Speaking abut her mother's nomination, Forrest says she is "very proud of him" and that she "really deserves the awards" because she "worked really hard for everything."

Sunday was Smart's first awards ceremony since her husband's death in March. He was 71 years old.

According to a press release shared with People at the time, Gilliland, who was married to actress Smart for nearly 34 years, was suffering from a "brief illness" before his death in Los Angeles.

Before his death, Gilliland and Smart were expected to work together again this summer in a film directed by Tate Taylor.

Accepting her award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series on Sunday for her role on Hacks, Smart honored her late husband and praised their two children.

"Before I say anything, I must acknowledge my life husband, Richard Gilliland, who passed away six months ago yesterday," she begins her speech. "I wouldn't be here without him putting his career on the back burner so that I can take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that I have. And my two incredibly selfless kids, Connor and Forrest."
